Subject: The Dukes

Here's some stuff concerning The Dukes:

There's a bit of whispering after "The Affiliated" --
that's the two little girls Lily and Lila Fraser in the
control room, and they think we're not listening to
them, like the Mothers of Invention thing, but we left
the mike running, I don't know what they're saying to
each other but you can hear them whispering and it's
only in one channels of the speaker.
      [Andy Partridge]

	       Psuccinct Psonic Psunspot Pstudy
		    by Gary Creighton Gold

Vanishing Girl: Hollies tune, circa '66 (i.e., Pay You
Back with Interest) harmonies and bass line especially.
Beatles ending chord (6th, I think).

Have You Seen Jackie: Magical Mystery mellotron.
Ogdens Nut intro w/ touch of Keith West and '67 Bowie.
Music effects Electric Prunes (I Had Too Much to Dream)
Strawberry Alarm Clock (done with a harmoniser unit set
    on "octave", by the way).

Little Lighthouse: More Prunes! (tremolo effect on
guitar). Slight XTC influence (a la This Is Pop).
    "Conquistador" trumpet). 19th Nervous Breakdown
    bassline on end fade.

Albert Brown: '67 Kinks Khorus with a Rutles dash.
Piano solo Mungo Jerry 1970 (early!). Laughing at end
from end of "We're Only in it for the Money" (the song
based on Kafka's "Penal Colony" ...forget the name...)

Collideascope: More Lennon ("Walrus") / Rutles
especially chord progression and voice overs on intro.

You're My Drug: "So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star"
(bass line and percussion and 12-string fills).

Shiny Cage: "I'm Only Sleeping" chords and acoustic
strumming. Touch of '66 Hollies too (again). GREAT
    ending!!!

Brainiac's Daughter: Yellow Submarine solo bubbles and
vocal answers on last chorus. More bouncy Carnaby
    Street chords.

    The Affiliated: A Mini-Opera! More minor-chord Beatles
("Cry Baby Cry") / "Dating Game" and Byrds break in
    middle.

Pale and Precious: Andy imitating Eric Carmen initating
Brian (with Dennis "Be Still" keyboard). Brian "Heroes
and Villians" bass tone... and NOTES!, but mellotron
makes it distinctly British. Also "Help Me Rhonda"
ba-ba-ba's. "California Girls" jaunty keyboard riffs
    in middle part.

Toby <toby@hce.computer-science.manchester.ac.uk> sez this
about the session for Andy Kershaw on Radio 1, Sun June
11, at 2115:

...actually I was disappointed. I'd hoped to hear the
3-acoustic guitar versions people have heard them do on
the US Radio tour. In fact it was studio versions (very
similar to LP, but not as detailed; some lyrics were
different, intros and outros too). They did King for a
Day, Garden of Earthly, and `always saying what he's gonna
    do' (forget title).

Subject: corrections of Mayor of Simpleton chords

Thanks to Joe Turner for posting the music for Mayor of Simpleton.
There are a few changes I'd like to suggest, however:

> C D G
> And I don't know how many pounds make up a ton

This should be:

      C D G A/G
And I don't know how many pounds make up a ton

           C D G A/G
Of all the Nobel prizes that I've never won

>
> G A7
> And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton but I
>
> C D
> Know one thing and that's I
>

And this should be:

      G E7
And I may be the Mayor of Simpleton but I

Am D
Know one thing and that's I

> Bm E7
> What you get is all real, I can't put on an act
>
> C D C/D
> It takes brains to do that anyway...

This should be:

         Bm Em
What you get is all real, I can't put on an act

         Am7 D C/D
It takes brains to do that anyway...

> Really, a disgustingly simple tune.

Perhaps deceptively so....

            - Mark

Did anyone make a proper recording of the Radio 1 Show featuring XTC?
Chalkhills would like to get a tape of the show for addition to the
"Live Appearances" tape-in-progress.
