On May 31st they played at Eastern Sound Studios in Toronto.  This was
broadcast through a network of station across Canada (via satellite?).
In Toronto they were broadcast over the airwaves of Q-107 (CILQ?)
later the same evening.  There were about twenty people in the
audience including June and Peter from the Little Express.

Hello,
Just a short note to introduce myself.  I've been listening to XTC since I
first heard 'Generals & Majors' back in '80.  I was just a casual listener
until I picked up a copy of 'Are You Receiving Me' at a local flea market
and since then I've been hooked.  I was thrilled when I discovered this
mailing list as although recordings by the band are relatively easy to
come by here in Canberra, Australia - info such as discographies etc and
indeed other fans seem to be pretty scarce so I'm looking forward to reading
other peoples thoughts, comments etc on their music.

According to the Bremerton XTC Discography, live tapes exist of a
number of XTC concerts in 1981 and 1982 in which were played songs

The Emerald City show was broadcast on FM and is widely available.  The
Ancienne Belgique show is also widely available.  I'm pretty sure I've seen
tapes available for the Paramount and Markthalle shows, possibly the
Paradiso.  The Le Palace show is available on video.  That's the show at
which Andy nearly collapses on stage.  Brutal video.

The latest word is that _The Greatest Living Englishman_ is due for a
September release.  That's Real Soon Now.  The cheque's in the mail and all
that.

I have a full Captain Sensible discography available (Thanks, Colm!) if
you're interested.  E-mail for a copy.  Only two of the Cap'n's albums are
available on CD, _Revolution Now_ and _The Universe of Geoffrey Brown_
(quite good).  "Croydon" is a wonderful song and is not available on CD at
all.  There are a few Cap'n songs on CD (besides those two albums), on
various compilation discs, including "Wot", "Happy Talk", "(What D'ya Give)
The Man Who's Gotten Everything / Our Souls To You", "Wot! No Meat?", and
"Glad It's All Over".  I'm praying for a CD with "Brenda" and "Croydon".

In the latest _Tower Records' Pulse!_ magazine:

           Offbeat records no sane major [label] would touch

    When it comes to oddball genius, few hold a candle to the late
    Ernest Noyes Brookings, an octogenarian nursing-home patient
    who was encouraged by then-director of activities David
    Greenberger to write poetry.  Ergo: "About September 16 year
    1969 no obscuro / From Gates Pond Road in Hudson / Began
    studying at high school East Foxboro / The farm family tarbox
    had buds on / Subjects grammar, history, art, mathematics /
    There were about 30 in the class / Teacher -- don't disturb the
    cat's bathematics / All students the examination did pass /
    Talkin' 'bout my high school education."  Brookings' poems
    became a huge hit in Greenberger's _Duplex Planet_ 'zine, which
    featured the writings and ramblings of the patients he worked
    with.  Set to music by various artists [including XTC],
    Brookings' poems take on a magical cast on three albums:
    _Lyrics by Ernest Noyes Brookings_ (Shimmy-Disc), and _Place of
    General Happiness_ and _Delicacy and Nourishment_ (both East
    Side Digital).  Two more sets are forthcoming.

Thought you might like the reference and review.  I think the reviewer
likes the albums more than I do, although Brookings really was a
character.

I've just (about 30 minutes ago) come back from a visit to Wivenhoe,
and while I was there, I talked to Martin Newell, Wivenhoe resident,
jobbing gerdener, and co-author with Andy Partridge of the forthcoming
album "The greatest Living Englishman". As a matter of fact, he was
drinking in "The Greyhound" with te guys from the record companyy when
I first ran into him.

The album exists. As a matter of fact, they start manufacture next week.
Release date is set for "October" (didn't say *when* in October) for the
US, and "November" for the UK.

Martin was *very* enthusiastic about it. He described it as "the best
thing he'd ever done, and order of magnitude better than anything by
The Cleaners from Venus or The Brotherhood of Lizards". I didn't however
get to listen to it, although Martin did offer. Why he wasn't down the
pub I just don't know.

I know this is off the subject, but a couple of related bits of info:
Apparently a Cleaners from Venus best-of CD is imminent (called
"Golden Cleaners". The "Rock Opera" Martin wrote with Captain Sensible
is coming out. Martin has just split up with his other half of rather
a lot of years (over six to my direct knowlege) and responded by going
on a drinking binge so massive that he ended up being hosiptalised
twice.  From one drinking binge. Now *that*'s a binge.
