Subject: XTC Convention 1993

I just spoke to Dave James who attended the 1993 XTC Music and Friends
Convention in Princeton, Illinois.  He apparently took the train from
Washington state, but perhaps I misunderstood him.  In our brief phone
conversation he outlined the happenings at the Convention, and I'll do
my best to relay what he said.

  Chris Twomey, the author of _Chalkhills and Children: XTC The
Definitive Biography_, attended and autographed copies of his book.
June and Peter Dix of The Little Express were also in attendance.
Videos were viewed, obscure noise was played for all to hear.  It was
fun.  Copies of _The Bull With The Golden Guts_ were available ($10).
T-shirts and buttons were also available from the organizers of the
Convention, Jeff Day and Virginia and Jim Lovejoy.

  Dave also said that Steve Ruhl (sp?) attended from Sacramento,
California, saying that he had met Andy Partridge at a radio station
appearence there last year.  Probably around the same time as the San
Francisco Tower Records appearence.

  I hope to speak to Dave in more detail at a later date.  In the
meantime, if anybody hears any more 1993 XTC Convention news, please
send in now!

Subject: Tower Records Pulse! 10th Anniversary

Hey folks,

  just ran into Tower Records (I wuz buying shampoo next door) and
picked up the latest issue of Pulse! magazine.  It's their Tenth
Anniversary Special issue (win a new car!).  It's jam-packed with the
latest inanities, but it also has the Readers' Poll results, and various
bits and pieces from the last ten years of interviews, reviews, and
such.

  in the 100 Best Full-Length Recordings Released Between 1983-1993 (as
determined by the readers of Pulse!), XTC comes up at Number 20! with
Skylarking.  (Nine Inch Nails and Public Enemy come up at numbers 19 and
21, respectively, and Oranges and Lemons are not to be found.)

  and in the In Their Own Words article, XTC have contributed the
following tidbits over the years:

    April 1987: ``The other day someone told me I looked more
    like a tractor-parts salesman than a rock singer.''  Andy
    Partridge.

    April 1987: ``I was at odds with Todd [Rundgren] --
    totally at Todds, you might say.''  Partridge.

    April 1989: ``I can understand the audience wanting to see
    us.  I was like that in my early teens.  When Jethro Tull
    or Free came, it was like, `They are actually coming to
    Swindon!'  You couldn't believe it.''  Colin Moulding.

    April 1989: ``I was never like that.  I never went to see
    any of my heroes, it just didn't interest me.  I could
    have seen Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, but I
    couldn't be bothered.  They were their records.  And
    because of the way I feel, I can't imagine anyone wanting
    to see me.''  Partridge.

    August 1992: ``Most songs come out with their own
    atmosphere and you have to listen to them, else the songs
    would sit in the corner having little tantrums.  In this
    case, some of them demanded a piano rather than a
    guitar.''  Partridge.

  finally, in the Desert Island Discs category, James T. Whipsen of New
York City wrote it saying Chips From The Chocolate Fireball by The Dukes
of Stratosphere was his number two favorite.  Pity being stuck on an
island with only that and nine other equally terrible records. . .

Subject: On tape:XTC life in Amsterdam

Hi all!

A few days ago I discovered in my cassette collection a tape with a life
concert of XTC. It was a concert they gave in Amsterdam (Paradiso) on March
8, 1982 and it was broadcasted on radio. After 10 years the sound quality of
the tape isn't super: it lost some of the higher frequencies. But by adding
treble on the amp I restored the quality a bit.
But what's more important: the band is playing tight, with full energy and
enthousiasm. The tape takes about an hour and has 12 songs on
it. Living though another Cuba, Reel by reel, Senses working overtime,
No thugs in our house, Sargents and Mayors are some of the songs they play.
If you are interested in this tape I'm willing to swap a copy of my tape to a
copy of a tape you own with rare XTC-material (Drunken studio sessions?), or
rare material by Robert Fripp / King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Todd Rundgren,
Caravan etc. Or maybe you recorded a tape with the band YOU are playing in.

I see in the latest list of forthcoming album releases in rec.music.misc
that an album entitled "The Greatest Living Englishman" by
Andy Partridge/Martin Newell is due for release in July.

Anyone know anything about this?
