talk about acting like a 14-year-old. speak for yourself about dan (drsmith@
piper.hamline.edu)'s postings - i happen to enjoy his style immensely. it
makes a refreshing change from the usual properly (read: boringly) capitalized
and spelled posts. you can skip over anything you want to, but that doesn't
give you the right to act as if you speak for everyone who reads chalkhills.
not to mention the fact that it was a completely uncalled-for flame (i know
flames are an inherent part of email, but how much less fun would they be
if people like me didn't object to them?!?).
re: "wardance" = slightly updated "generals & majors" - true, but IMO "generals
& majors" is a better song.
re: people's fave album being the one they were first into - i don't know
about everyone else, but that is certainly not true for me - my first album
was _nonsuch_, closely followed by _oranges & lemons_, neither of which are
now my faves (yes, i know i'm committing a huge faux pas to even _admit_ that
i only got into xtc that late in the game, but so what?).

Some of us don't mind a little extra effort.  It's really not that
bad, and I _still_ think it's pretty funny.  Go ahead and skip, if
the messages bug you that much, but take my advice and never come

I'm new to the group and actually a pretty new fan of XTC, too...

I was wondering if there are any musicians on this list that have hammered out
the guitar parts of XTC songs....
It would be great to have the tab/chords located at the chalkhills FTP site as
well as the lyrics!

Subject: new bands...

I'm always leery when someone promises, "Hey, if you like XTC, you'll love this
band..." So no such promises here. But I'm a major fan of XTC, and I just ran
across a couple bands that really tickle my fancy. Neither sounds like XTC, but
perhaps they offer some of the same appeal: great pop/hook sense, great
production, avoidance of the three-chord/grunge rut, original lyrics. But
here's the really great news: THey're both showcased on a free sampler from a
new record label, Racer Records. I have no connection to the label, but I
enjoyed the sampler so much I want to pass along the toll-free phone number:

Oh yeah, the bands are Big Umbrella and Amy X Neuburgh. Two artists of six on
the sampler.

"The Bull With The Golden Guts" is the latest fan-club only cassette
tape of Andy Partridge's home demos, available only from The Little
Express, the official North American XTC fan club.  The Little Express
is well worth the cost of subscription, the magazine is very nicely
done, and you get the opportunity to obtain such items as "The Bull"
and previously "Jules Verne's Sketchbook", the first collection of
Andy Partridge's home demos.  To subscribe to The Little Express,
write a letter (enclosing SAE or equivalent) to

    The Little Express: Box 1072, Barrie, Ontario, L4M 5E1, Canada

And make sure to ask about "The Bull".  Tell 'em Chalkhills sent ya.

A pretty good book.  It has been reviewed in depth and at length in
Chalkhills.  Try checking out a few back issues.
