I've been quite the avid Thomas Morgan Dolby Roberson fan for many
years and am very dissappointed be this piece of sh*t that passes for
his latest album. Even he claimed that nothing will ever be as
groundbreaking as his first album, compiled over a period of five
years while working as the keyboardist for Joan Armatrading. On his
latest he does nothing but coast while creating fair background
music. Dolby doesn't even display the good-natured silliness of
Aliens Ate My Buick. This just furthers my theory that any band only
has ten years of quality song writing and performing time before they
stagnate. As much as this list hates me for it I believe the ten
years rule applies to XTC, I'm one of those "I was listening to XTC
before you were born and blah blah blah". I really think The Big
Express was their last good album and English Settlement was
their best.
Asbestos suit on, flame away.

That's because you've got the correct, proper version on album and the nasty,
Capitol-ized version on CD. When Capitol sensed they had hits with One of Our
Submarines and She Blinded Me with Science, they dropped Leipzig and Urges
and put out a new version on vinyl all those years ago. CDs were made from
the tapes they had, namely the nasty vinyl re-release, not the correct, proper
way the album was meant to be.

Email me, BTW, if you would like a track listing of how the Golden Age was
originally set up so's you can program your multi-disc player properly to hear
the way the album was supposed to sound. Kinda like Sgt. Pepper. :=)

Who says we start a separate Thomas Dolby mailing list? It'd keep the non-XTC
content down here. (Hangs head in shame for contributing to the non-XTC
content of the XTC mailing list.)

ObXTC: I've been playing mondo amounts of XTC on the radio show lately, and
been getting telephone calls: "Hey, who's that? Wow, this is great!" etc.
Nice to know that SOMEONE still appreciates XTC.

Also, it seems that Jim Ladd (of L.A. radio fame) has a syndicated show out.
The only show I've caught so far was talking about religion, so (naturally)
he played "Dear God." Of course, Ladd was also heavily involved with the next-
to-last Roger Waters album, "Radio KAOS," and he played much from the current
Waters album. I'd almost suspect something, if I didn't know Ladd was a really
hoopy guy. But, it was nice to hear someone else having trouble bailing out
of the end of "Dear God" where it goes right into the next track. Giggle.

Hi everyone,

My name is Markus De Shon. I'm a Ph.D. candidate in Physics at the Georgia
Institute of Technology. When I'm not busy with that, I am also music director
at GaTech's student radio station: WREK 91.1FM 40,000 Watts 24 hours a day.
WREK is a diverse radio station, which is to say, we play Rock, Rap, Blues,
Jazz, Reggae, Metal, International, Experimental, Classical, in approximately
that order. We play XTC on occasion; for example, several cuts off of
Rag N' Bone Buffet were in rotation for a while.

I personally have been a fan of XTC since about 1984 or so. I guess the first
album I heard was English Settlement. I was stunned by it's intelligence
and listenability. My brother had pretty much all of the albums that
were out up to that time, and I taped them to listen to myself. I ended
up being more of a fan than he was, so that now I have all the CDs I could
lay my hands on both here and in Germany.

I guess I would have to say that the reason my fascination with XTC has
endured is that every time I listen to the albums again, I notice something
new, some phrase or riff that I hadn't noticed before. XTC has, in my mind,
always been the trendsetter for other bands.

I love the discussions about Thomas Dolby, he's one of
my personal jesuses, but I was wondering if there was
any other forum to tlak about him, like another list
or a newsgroup.
Until I get a reply on that one, I'd just like to point
out that the versions of "Radio Silence" and "Europa"
played in the videos for these songs are quite a bit
different from those on _Wireless_. Is it because
they are live versions, or are there a bunch of
different versions out? I really prefer the "Radio
Silence" from the video, with Lena Lovitch (I think)
singing backup.

Here's the poop on yet another boot that's turned up in the states
(specifically, Houston).

"XTC USA 1980" on the Raraties & Few Red line label (1992, "made in EEC").
Seems to be an Italian boot. ADD mix:

1. Love at First Sight (3:30)
2. Respectable Street (3:38)
3. No Language in Our Lungs (5:26)
4. This is Pop (2:22)
5. Scisser (sic) Man (5:01)
6. Towers of London (5:35)
7. Battery Brides (7:35)
8. Living Through Another Cuba (3:39)
9. Generals and Majors (4:49)
10. Making Plans for Nigel (4:22)
11. Are You Receiving Me? (3:15)

At first, I thought it was another of the last live show discs, until I
realized its a USA disc (at least, claims to be), and the Bushman track isn't
on this one. So, I snagged it. $30. OK, so I probably got taken, but the
sound quality is on par with most legit live discs (IMHO). I'd type in the
liner notes, but they're in Italian! The booklet does credit Partridge with
vocals/ guitars, Moulding with Bass, Gregory with Keyboards/Guitars, and Terry
Chambers with Drums. Oh yeah, catalog number RFCD 1211, for all the good that
does the world. :=) It even has a bar code, so how boot is this thing,
anyway?

Subject: 9 ICEy Rhinos, and a Partridge...

Hi folks. I know that a few other Chalkhillians receive ICE, the monthly
International Cd Exchange newsletter, but I got mine yesterday and maybe
I'll be the first to pass on the XTC news I saw within.
It seems that Rhino Records will begin releasing a 9-cd set starting
in January of Punk, Power Pop, & New Wave music from 1975-79. One of the
first discs will include XTC's "This Is Pop". Even without XTC, the song
and group line-up looks very strong (at least to me, "Mr. New Wave"), and
I want all nine discs, right now!!
Congrats to fellow Chalkhillian and Thomas Dolby fan Wes Wilson, who
turned a double play by buying Dolby's new CD single "Silk Pyjamas"
(if I recall it) which includes "Airhead", "Leipzig", and "Urges".
Andy Partridge contributed "hand-claps" or something to "Urges". I wonder
if that's mentioned on the CD's liner notes... over to you, Wes!

I ran into Jon Leidecker today, and he and his friend don't mind my
distributing the tape of XTC refuse old and new to the fan community.

It is along the lines of Jules Verne's Sketchbook, but not as good.
The quality is kind of shoddy, its been through a number of copies, but
oh well.

So as of now I am trying to get an idea of who would like one. I have
some people appended to a file.
Please email all further stuff on the subject to ukevc@mcl.ucsb.edu
to keep it off the list.

I ran the sped-up noise from the Dukes, immediately before Vanishing
Girl begins (i love that track... it's the greatest pop song in the universe)
through a sound-editor program, and it's the "go f yourself with your
atombomb" noise. I was under the impression that that was slowed down,
but at least i finally found it.

-eagerly awaiting the opportunity to save money by relying the knowledge
that my roommate is sure to spring for the "Wrapped in Grey" single,

Just to confirm that the details of the UK pressing are the same
as those posted previously: the title is "Live in Concert", although the
spine and back cover say "BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert"; the CD is on
Windsong (WINCD 026); the track list (as printed) is:

1 Life Begins at the Hop (3:55)
	 2 Burning with Optimism's Flame (4:24)
3 Love at First Sight (3:10)
	 4 Respectable Street (3:51)
5 No Language in Our Lungs (4:59)
	 6 This is Pop (2:49)
	 7 Scissors Man (4:49)
	 8 Towers of London (5:23)
	 9 Battery Brides (7:18)
10 Living Through Another Cuba (3:29)
	11 Generals and Majors (4:28)
12 Making Plans for Nigel (4:29)
13 Are You Receiving Me? (3:18)

Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of the symbols "@^*" which
appear several times in the artwork on the booklet?

Subject: Wrapped In Grey

Over the weekend I finally got a copy of the "Wrapped In Grey" single.
The copy I procured had a sticker affixed to its cover, apparently from
Virgin Records, which claimed that "Wrapped In Grey, the new single from
the critically acclaimed Nonsuch, will be released on September 7th".
September 7? Yeah, and monkeys might fly . . . This must have been one
of the radio promo copies sent to radio stations. It appears that
Virgin may never actually release this single. The track listing, as
previously reported by Derf the Smurf, is "Wrapped In Grey", "Bungalow"
(demo), "Bungalow" (LP version), and "Rip Van Ruben" (demo). The two
demos have previously been available only on the Little Express 1991
Convention limited edition _Window Box_ cassette. It's nice to hear
them on CD. You can hear Colin very clearly on the demo, and except for
a bit of annoying "la la la" backup vocals, I think the demo is every
bit as good as the album version, at least as regards the performance.
"Rip Van Ruben" is still quite interesting in a sixties way, and has
some funny musical turns. If you can find a copy of this single, do so.
